Gamepad vs. Mouse

Jarod | February 22, 2009

I’ve been playing Resistance 2 on my PS3 and I like it. It looks good (a little dark sometimes), is well paced, and has awesome fights with giant bosses. It does not have auto-aim, but can be controlled rather well with a gamepad. Of course, the enemies are pretty dumb and stand around most of the time, waiting for you to shoot them. Some use shields, some run at you, but usually they only become dangerous in large numbers.

I am downloading the Empire: Total War demo as I write this, off of Steam. And the F.E.A.R. 2 demo. Jumpgate Evolution was announced for June (finally!) and I have yet to beat Fallout 3. But: the console has its advantages. Sitting on the couch in front of the telly, I mean, it’s just a natural thing. Yet games on the PC look better, can be customized, have quick save (oh yeah, baby), and can be controlled with a precise controller: a mouse. I think it will come down to the games. With all the trouble I had with GTA IV, that’s a typical console game. Shooters? PC. RPG? Depends. Action-RPG? Console. Strategy? PC. And so on.

Apart from games, a new friend of mine and I have decided we have to get out more. Free up more time, worry less about unimportant issues and stop pretending work was the only  important thing in life. While I won’t be able to work less this year – and I don’t really want to for that matter – I might have to change my schedule, start earlier, finish earlier. That has never worked in the past, though. Well come spring and summer, I will have more reasons to go out there with my camera. These grey weekends, all I ever want to do is sleep. Only thing I’ll have to do is, get my friends off the night shift train, too – and that’s not going to be easy, as we’re all equally busy.

Well, I’ve decided to have one wonderful worry-free week, doing what I want to do, frak the rest. Not had that in a while, and I know who triggered that. Good signs, all over the place.

Errr busy, sorry

Jarod | February 15, 2009

Man, I’ve been busy this weekend. Too busy to think about a blog post. I guess I’m one of those guys who start twittering and then neglect their blog :/

Fact is, I’m trying to get my photos organized, backup my system, update my iPod, do the dishes and play Fallout 3 all at the same time.

As for Twitter, it goes well, I’ve been using it regularly, less than before though.

That’s it, gotta run byeby

The Experiment, Week 2

Jarod | February 8, 2009

Week 2 on Twitter:

  1. 91 updates total, i.e. I kept up the rate
  2. I’m down to 42 people that I follow. Too much background noise otherwise.
  3. I’m up to 18 followers. The 4 new people I don’t know.

Comment this week: The lazy blogger’s tool. To be continued …

Organized my short trip to Berlin. Quite a management challenge. I will actually FLY back, ’cause it’s hardly more expensive and more than twice as fast than taking a train. And I bet the flight will be on time.

The Wire is a quite realistic cop show, especially if you compare it to The Shield. I yet have to get into the characters, so far I like it very much, though.

Amazon says Battlestar Galactica S4.5 (aka “The final season”) will be out in June. That’s surprisingly early, let’s hope it’s realistic. In the meantime, I sweat every single week.

I still cannot believe that I soon will write about console games, too. I feel like a traitor … anyways, I’ve beaten GTA4, Fallout 3 is next.

The Experiment, Week 1

Jarod | February 1, 2009

So after one week of using Twitter, let’s go have a look and see what has happened so far.

  1. I wrote 48 updates, that comes down to app. 7 a day. I’ve had conversations, said random stuff and sometimes I actually wrote what I was doing.
  2. I’ve been following 47 people in total. Well, not all of them are people.
    • Out of these 47, I’ve met 7 in person. They are friends or colleagues or both.
    • Then there are a couple of childhood heroes and others, well, real people – like the “internet superstar” Wil Wheaton.
    • Then there are news services, companies/web sites/shows, and a bunch of funny random people I’ve found more or less by accident.
  3. I currently have 14 followers.
    • Included are my 7 friends …
    • … and 7 people I have never heard of.

Will I continue? Well, this would not be much of an experiment if it only lasted one week, so yes. It still feels like not-so-instant messaging – because that’s what it is – but unlike on Skype, ICQ etc. you can actually “meet” people you otherwise yould never get the chance to listen to, let alone talk back to. I spent about half an hour each day reading and writing, I guess. I wonder if I will still bother once the novelty wears off.
