Almost there

Jarod | December 31, 2005

The year 2005 ends in a few hours. My education tells me that the event actually is nothing more than a very subtle change – a number increases, and a new month starts. I’ve always been wondering why we didn’t choose a more friendly season for the year-change. Of course it makes sense in some way – not going to discuss that here – I’d still prefer New Year’s Eve to be in summer time – especially my birthday. First of all it wouldn’t be so wet and freakingly cold, and second I had a party day less I have to attend to each year ;) .

It was an exciting year with a lot of change for me. And the new one is going to start quite well and no less exciting, I believe. My wishes for 2k6? Besides the same I have every year – world peace and prosperity for everyone plus good health for me – I have no special plans. At least none that everyone else doesn’t share. Unless … any woman out there looking for a geeky blogger?

There is one thing, I want to try contacting some old friends I haven’t seen or spoken to in a loooong time. I don’t expect to accomplish much, but who knows … maybe they are just waiting for the first step to be made – like I am.

May the next year be your best (as always, of course). Have a fun night. And don’t eat too much cheese.

Aftermath, Part 2

Jarod | December 28, 2005

So, yesterday I went on a scavenger hunt. At least that is what my quest for the lost present turned out to be. I actually found my way into the city’s main shopping streets and malls and what did I find there? Even more people than before Christmas, cashing vouchers, bartering unwanted gifts, buying now-cheap stuff on sale and so on and so forth. I just wanted to find me a copy of the Firefly DVD set and a few other things. Turns out to be an impossible endeavour. In the one shop where the info guy actually knew what I was talking about it was sold out, too – just like everywhere else. So I ordered it from the internet of course. I may be a geek by nature, but all the times I try to act like I was normal I find that I was right from the start. Internet good, real-outside-world-shopping baaad. And f*ck the whole ‘wrong day to go shopping’ theory – in a city with way more than half a million people you can expect more than one bigger, mainstream+ CD/DVD shop, can’t you? Obviously not. I mean, they had all the Stargate boxes and many other shows that I’ve never heard of. Gee.

By the way, while browsing through all my old stuff I found a few of those collectable stickers from Star Trek – The Next Generation. I still have a Q, a Mr. Worf … and you guessed it? – a Wil ‘Wesley’ Wheaton sticker. If I had a car, he’d my new favourite bumper sticker.

Aftermath

Jarod | December 27, 2005

Christmas is done, and so am I. Stuffed with filling (or filled with stuffing?), cookies, chocolate and the like – as always on day 1 after Christmas. Now, what did Santa bring? The PC game that won the most stupid name award 2k5: First Encounter Assault Recon. It’s too bad I can’t try it yet but it’s supposed to have scary small ghost girls in it, just what I like. Also: Tad William’s Shadowmarch, another fun book, shower gel, new razor blades and a few more smaller things.

I’d love to tell you more about what happened in the last days, but Monk is on right now … I’ll continue tomorrow. Stay tuned :)

2 pm != 6 pm

Jarod | December 24, 2005

We finally got home after 4 hours, driving really fast. No traffic jams, no snow, no fog, we were lucky. The problem was, our driver promised to pick us up at 2 pm. He called a few times and sent a few messages, but that couldn’t mask the fact that when we finally left my sister’s place we were four hours late. The driver’s girlfriend who was also on board insisted on listening to a children’s play, „Urmel“ for three hours straight. That made any sleep attempts futile to say the least.

Great experience, thanks, I think I’ll take the train on my way back.

Oh right, it’s Christmas today. See, no Xmas, X-Mas, Chrisnukkah … or else. Just plain old Cristmas this year, with the very same tree (ok, not the very same tree), presents (on 24th of course, not 25th), tons of food and laziness. Lets hope we can skip the occasional tsunami this time around and any other world-scale catastrophies with it. It’s my holidays after all, and I need some relaxation. Seriously.

I’ll let you know what I find under the tree. Have a nice, quiet Christmas with your families, no matter what religion, caste or whatever social group you belong to. We’re all equal Shadows, and if everybody understands this, I’ll have a lot less to worry about next year. Take care.

PS. Don’t just open all Christmas related email attachments blindly. Santa can be a bitch, y’know.
